2017 Affiliate Marketing Goals

An Open Letter to Affiliate U Members, Followers, and Lurkers!

2016 ended nicely, with many members making money, and some just crushing Black Friday!

As we start 2017 I wanted to drop a note to you all regarding some plans for the coming year as well as lend some tips and advice to help you hit your affiliate marketing income goals for the year.

We all have some goals we want to hit this year, and now is the time we usually get all pumped about them and are aggressive to tackle them, but what I have found over the years is that staying committed to those goals is the challenge. We come out of the gate on fire and after a few months fizzle back, so here are some tips to help you avoid that cycle:

  • Set realistic goals for yourself whether they are content creation, investing more time into your business, learning a new skill set, finding a new niche, etc – make it realistic and something you really want, and put a visual reminder of it somewhere where you can see it every day until you achieve it.
  • Keep it simple!! Sometimes we tend to over complicate things, whether it is over-thinking your routine, giving up too soon, or just not putting in the time. This is formula!  The time put in will yield rewards later!
  • There is NOT a magic trick, hack, or button you can press that will accelerate your success.  Content creation and backlinks are crucial steps that can’t have short cuts.  They don’t exist, no matter what some software or guru promises you.
  • Consistent efforts are KEY.  There will be bumps in the road, obstacles that pop up throughout the year, trips, vacations, injuries, etc… do not let any of them derail you. Be consistent in your routine!! In getting up everyday, going through statistics, getting content ordered, placed, and with proper SEO in mind, you are growing your business.  Leave the excuses in your rear view, it’s a new year and time to get a new mindset.
  • Lastly – I strongly encourage all of you to take advantage of the amazing Facebook group we have.  While it’s members only, I have created one for non-members right here.  It’s a free group where we educate people on what we’re all about in the paid group.  Like an educational institution, Affiliate U is a community, and we help one another.  So if you surfed onto this affiliate marketing blog and are curious as to what we’re all about, go ahead and check it out.  I’ll see you inside and personally answer questions you may have.

To another year of making money online, working from anywhere, and doing big things!

Black Friday Affiliate Marketing Earnings Reports 2016

I’m happy to say that some of my students really kicked things into high gear this year!  We’ve officially completed one full year since the BETA launch of Affiliate U, the training course that shows you how to sell other people’s goods from an internet connection anywhere in the world!  That’s right, a web-based over the shoulder video series shows you step by step how you can earn money by selling other people’s goods without the hassle of employees, inventory, and merchant accounts.

Just promote, link, and SELL.

How easy is that?

Well, it’s not the easiest thing in the world – I’m brutally honest about that.  Like anything else in life it takes hard work, consistency, and patience.  But if you follow my road map, select a solid niche, and execute your game plan that I lay out on a silver platter (I even offer up my best advice for structuring your day for massive success), you’ll be on your way to mirroring the success that my students are enjoying right now.

So let’s recap what happened on Black Friday in 2016.

Affiliates Who Made Money on Black Friday in 2016

Note:  this is just a small sample of the earnings reports generated through my tactics.  Many people are private with their revenues and business, which I totally respect.  These people voluntarily shared their information and earnings, and I commend them on being so candid.

Brad Smith Brings in Over a Grand of Cash!

Over a Grand!

Norman felt he left some money on the table, but $1,500 is nothing to be upset about!  Good job, Norm!

Norman Black friday earnings

Last year, for the first time ever, “clicks” beat “bricks.”  Many people, myself included, helped bridge the gap between consumers who were looking for shopping advice, reviews, or sometimes something as easy as a coupon code.  Along the way, we stock piled cash and provided a very noble service.

Get in on the affiliate marketing gold rush. It’s an industry that’s on it’s way up, as I blogged about here.

How to Cloak Affiliate Links

If you’re building a review site of any kind that you intend to monetize, the best way to do that is to add affiliate links of products that you recommend. It’s a great way to make money online, and if you take this seriously, you can make a tremendous living this way.

I’ve always felt that affiliate links need to be cloaked and redirected through some type of a redirect script. Knowing how to do this is not necessarily the easiest thing to accomplish if you don’t have proper instructions. So I’m going to teach you how to cloak affiliate links the easiest and simplest way possible. But before I get into my explanation, let’s look at why you should be cloaking these links to begin with.

Why Cloaking Affiliate Links Is Important

In all honesty, there are many reasons why people decide to redirect affiliate links. All the super affiliate marketers do this.  Historically speaking, one of the biggest reasons to cloak affiliate links was to hide the fact that you are an affiliate from Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines. Although, the search engines have to know that affiliate links have been cloaked anyway. It would be kind of ridiculous if they didn’t figure this out. But, the reason why affiliate links were cloaked at the start was because these links were intended to be hidden from search engine bots.

Truth be told, there are a number of other reasons why we should all cloak our affiliate links. The top three reasons include the following:

  • Creates a “clean” link – have you ever seen an Amazon affiliate link? It’s huge, has about 1000 characters, and it’s really ugly. The easiest way to eliminate this ugly looking affiliate link and create a clean one is to cloak it using a redirect script.
  • Stops page rank leakage – instead of wasting time no following every affiliate link, an easy and less painful way to accomplish the same thing is to create a cloaked affiliate link.
  • Makes them easy to manage – you may need to change affiliate links for one reason or another from time to time. Instead of physically having to go into your content to change the link, it’s a lot easier to do this from a centralized location.

How to Cloak Affiliate Links Using a Redirect Script

The process is simple and includes the following three steps:

  • Create a redirect folder. A simple one to remember is /redirect/.
  • Add the following to block the folder from your domain’s robots.txt file: Disallow: /redirect/.
  • In the/redirect/ folder, use a script like Pretty Link Pro and redirect your affiliate URLs.

At the end of the day, you’ll appreciate using redirected affiliate links for many reasons. We shared three reasons with you already and redirects honestly make your life so much easier. It’s a lot easier to swap out an affiliate link in one central location than it is to physically go back to hundreds or even potentially thousands of links and change them manually. This saves a lot of time, effort, and energy, and you’ll definitely appreciate this option once you begin using it.

OMG Live 2016 Orlando

OMG (which stands for “One Man Gang”) Machines has been a driving force in helping me achieve goals. It’s the most comprehensive Internet Marketing program money can buy.  With a focus on search engine optimization (SEO), the course also covers selling on, building e-commerce businesses, and lead generation.  While it doesn’t stop there, it covers those topics (in my opinion) better than any other course of it’s kind.

OMG Live is their annual live event, and this year it was in Orlando, Florida.  I had the pleasure of being a speaker at the event this year, and I spoke for an hour on the topic of affiliate marketing, which of course is what I teach in this video series.

If you are interested in information about OMG and what it’s all about, please fill out this form.

OMG Live Recap

The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Convention center, in the Windermere Room.  It was a very well put together show.  The speakers were mostly OMG coaches like Greg Morrison, Joshua Fletcher, Liz Herrera, and Stephen Floyd, who are all veteran OMG guys.  Kotton Grammer was the host and MC, and did a wonderful job of putting everything together.  Outside of OMG Machines, Derek Iwasiuk, Ryan Stewart, Alex Becker, and myself spoke and led up to the main event – Jordan Belfort!  Otherwise known as the Wolf of Wall Street, this man has been through some ups and downs in life, but he knows selling better than anyone I’ve ever come across. Needless to say, the event was star studded and with 1,200 people in attendance, it was a great event.

The networking is always off the charts.  I was able to see my good friend and student Gregory Ortiz. along with many other Affiliate U students.  You meet so many people with similar mindsets, goals, and interests at events like this.  It’s always good to see people who are at the top of their game, as well as see up and comers who are there gunning to join the ranks.  Here’s a few photos from this years event.

I honestly shot from the hip for the most part, although I did have a few slides to guide me through what I wanted to talk about.  I wondered if I did a good job as I was presenting, because to me this stuff all seems natural and like I’m having a conversation with myself.  When I logged into Facebook and saw these comments, I felt much better about what I talked about.

Next up, Michael Devlin’s Mass Conversions Event at the Aria Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.  January 29, 2017.  I’ll have a more detailed update shortly.

The Affiliate Marketing Lifestyle

I’m not going to lie, being mobile and able to do whatever I want 100% of the time (barring some event my son must attend for school or sports) is the #1 perk of being an affiliate marketer.  Today I’m going to share with you what the first half of 2016 looked like so you can see what the life of a long time affiliate marketing guru looks like.

What It’s Like to Be an Affiliate Marketing Guru

First off, I’ll add that I love to travel. You’ve probably picked that up from my post about working in Grand Cayman.  For me, there is nothing more educational than learning how other cultures make things happen and go through daily life.  I like to explore, play rare golf courses, (rather – hack around on their course), enjoy local cuisine, and maybe pick up a new language along the way.  I believe that getting outside of my comfort zone helps me expand my mind and become a more rounded person.  Living in the slums of Nicaragua as an exchange student in the year 2000 was my first venture into “bizarroworld” but it certainly wasn’t the last.

I’m going to recap what I was able to do over the first six months of 2016, and try to recall the play by play as I remember it.

January 2016 Travel and Events

I’m not a big new years person. I like to avoid anything that’s commercialized because it brings out everyone who holes up for 90% of the year and who come out to celebrate like it’s their first rodeo.  New Years brings out 50% inflation on the same drinks you can drink #OnaTuesday and has people who rarely drink hammering down shots of tequila and chasing it with bubbly.  That’s a recipe for a lot of puke and a nasty hangover.

For those reasons, I started off my year lounging around my house and watching college football.  Sure, I had a few libations, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Affiliate Summit West 2016 After about a week of trying to kick off my New Years Resolution of getting down to the weight I carried around in college, I had an event in Las Vegas to attend that essentially was one of the starting points of Affiliate U.  It was Affiliate Summit West 2016, and I was pretty stoked to be there.

Spending four days in Vegas allowed me to meet up with industry and local Vegas friends as well as attend an event and meet up with new people.  Being able to pick up and go there, as well as keep up with all my business online, was something that made the 5 and a half hour trip that much easier.  When you add in the fact that most domestic flights offer WIFI services, I rarely miss a beat with work.

I stayed at Aria, which was a change from the place I’m very loyal to, being the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.  It was a letdown, but I wanted to try something different and it was a nice hotel, but it wasn’t a Wynn Property by any means.  Vegas was fun.  I won some money, saw some friends, made new ones, and left with my tail between my legs after the Vikings lost a game they certainly should have won.  Other than that, it was a great trip.

I came home from Vegas and had a full week off to prepare for my next trip to Grand Cayman.  One of my best friends was heading there with his family and he invited my son and I to meet up with with him and his family, which made the trip extra special.  I had visited the Cayman’s many times, but bringing my son to the beach (and see the joy on his face for being able to miss school) was a game changer.  I worked on my laptop on the beach when I needed to and had drink service and shade at my disposal.  It was truly relaxing and of course even that much better being able to see life long friends that I consider family.

Cayman Islands 2016

Would you like this to be your office?

With another week gap to sort out life at home I was quickly returning back to the road as we had our annual Ice Fishing Tournament in Brainerd, Minnesota.  While the Ice Fishing Gala was cancelled since the ice wasn’t thick enough, that didn’t stop us from having fun and playing plenty of poker and boot hockey.  It’s always fun re-uniting with my college friends.  We pick up right where we left off the last time we saw one another.

I didn’t make this video, and it’s from the 2015 tourney, but for those who have always wondered “What the heck is an ice fishing contest?”…..well, it’s the best I can do to answer that question!

Business called and I was needed down in Costa Rica to explore some expansion opportunities for my skin care company.  It’s never a bad thing to have to be in Costa Rica, a place I lived for several years and enjoy visiting many times each year.  I had some Internet Marketing friends join in the fun and watched the Super Bowl from one of my favorite places on Earth, the Marriott Los Suenos Resort & Marina.

Costa Rica 2016

If you look closely, you’ll notice I’m holding chicken legs. These were used to feed giant crocodiles. Don’t ask!

With just a two week break between trips, I was called by a great friend I’ve helped mentor in affiliate marketing, Gregory Ortiz.  He’s front and center in the photo above on his first trip to Costa Rica.  He was considering a move to Puerto Rico and wanted me to accompany him on his trip to look at houses.  Hey, I showed him my old stomping grounds, so why not check out a place he’s looking at relocating to?

I’d never been to Puerto Rico and found it very enjoyable.  We even put our heads together to get some work done!

Working From Anywhere and Creating Wealth

I was barely unpacked from Puerto Rico and it was off to Copper Mountain in Colorado for some skiing with family friends.  Four other families joined my son and myself in a mountain retreat where we enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, sledding, enjoyed the hot tub, and each others company for 6 days in lovely Colorado.  I didn’t miss a beat with any work and found myself getting more ideas for content than ever being that I was in an entirely different environment.

Skiing 2016

Our annual Fort Lauderdale family & friends ski trip is all about the kids.

With a week off from skiing, it was time to get some work done.  A hard week in the office was spent before going back to Las Vegas, this time for an OMG Machines Meet up.  You’ll see my full review of this educational course which is really more like a brotherhood of Internet Marketing Minds, in an upcoming blog entry.  If you have questions about it and don’t want to wait for that, join my email newsletter or email sales AT and I’ll be happy to share my take on this dynamic course.

The event was great, and it coincided with Alex Becker’s book release.  I work with Becker, who has an incredible resume already and isn’t even 30 years old, in Source University.  I’ll elaborate on that in an upcoming blog as well.  To see so many friends and colleagues was incredible, especially because the Vegas sun was a big change from the Mountains of Colorado.

You’d think I’d just want to relax when I was at home in Sunny Florida, right?

Instead, I had 5 college friends visit me just after tax day.  While we failed at our goal to catch a shark with the unforgettable “Mark the Shark,” the famous Miami fishing captain, we still enjoyed the time on the water.  My son caught this fish below, and it made his day.

Shark Fishing Gone Wrong

Not exactly a shark, but he was happy.

May brought the NBA Playoffs and I was there in row three to watch my beloved Miami Heat.  While we ended up losing to the Raptors, they fought hard for a team that was without star Chris Bosh and I’m really looking forward to next season.  May once again had me back in Las Vegas where I was networking for the ICSC expo.  I also got some down time with friends and was able to enjoy myself a bit more than usual.

On June 9th, my son got out of school and we headed directly to the airport to spend the first 11 days of Summer in Minnesota.  That trip just concluded with an unforgettable baseball game between the Twins and the visiting New York Yankees.  I had friends visit during my time in Minnesota, which made it that much more special.  Showing people around my home State is something I truly enjoy.

Twins Baseball 2016

As I wrap up this blog post, I’m about to get back to the grind.  Writing content, checking out search engine results, and more importantly, looking at sales figures.  This was a very brief summary of all the things I recall from the first six months of 2016.  I know for a fact I’ve left out more than a dozen unforgettable memories, but when you love what you do, every day is full of memories.

If you are interested in working remote, creating your own lifestyle like this, and having a mentor all along the way, get the Affiliate U Training Course and I’ll look forward to hearing about your own journeys as well.

To another great six months and the start of Summer!

9 Ways to Become a Super Affiliate Marketer

Have you ever heard the term “Super Affiliate” and wonder just how you can go from the average every day affiliate to a “super” affiliate?

I once tried to answer that question. I struggled to make things work.  I wasn’t making enough money.  But then, after I figured out a few things, I hit my stride and found a way to work anywhere I want, travel any time I please, and really enjoy life.

Today I’m going to share with you 9 ways I’ve carved out that form a guide on how you can from from an average Joe with an average income to a high powered affiliate rock star with a budding business and affiliate program directors chomping at the bit to obtain your traffic.

9 Tips to Being a Super Affiliate

#1:  Know Your Product

This is the best advice I can give.  When you know your product and can speak eloquently about it, you have a much higher chance at converting clicks to customers.  If you are entering a niche you have very little knowledge about, (which does happen from time to time as new trends emerge or as you find out a website you own simply has traffic in an area that you aren’t too knowledgeable about) you MUST learn about the product as soon as humanly possible.  Use Google to your advantage and soak up information.  Attend seminars, schedule a meeting with someone who you can ask to be your mentor on the topic.  Do whatever it takes to educate yourself, because in the end, knowledge is power.

#2:  Know Your Audience

There are people out there who have a want and a need.  Your job is to find their pain points and connect the dots.  If you are promoting a weight loss product, ask your audience if they are “sick and tired of having belly fat.”  That’s a pain point right there and a clear problem.  Give them a solution and do it in a manner where you talk them into becoming a better person because of the amazing things your product can do for them.

#3:  Content is King

I love to write, so this comes very naturally to me. If you don’t love to write, become a YouTube sensation and record videos on the topics you want to cover because you MUST have numerous messages for people to stumble upon.  Search Engines love content, and so do readers.  Give them a virtual library of resources on whatever topic you are covering.

#4:  Persona Hack

This is a very key component of my online course.  I teach you how to be personable with your readers and connect with them on levels they weren’t expecting when the first stumbled into you.  If you aren’t giving your readers a clear picture of who you are, you are leaving out a very important step.

#5:  Do The Math

If you put in x amount of hours on your website or marketing efforts, what will that generate in revenues?  The first 1-6 months will generally be a ramp up period unless you have an existing website or platform for traffic, but once you obtain steady traffic and a following, find out what your return on your time is.

#6:  Don’t Be Afraid to Get Help

Ask a friend or family member to contribute to the website or YouTube channel.  Give people another voice to hear and follow.  People like variety are are engaged when you mix up your messages.  You can also outsource content and video work to really heat up your followers.

#7:  Be like TMZ

Ever notice how TMZ is on top of every trending story involving celebrities?  They have people watching news wires and contacting relevant insiders for information.  Become the person who “scoops the story” in your niche.  Inside Affiliate U, you’ll find many examples of how you can get news that your competition is NOT getting.  It can be the difference of getting people to your website before the big news outlets have a chance to grab all the traffic.

#8:  Network

Are there any meet-ups or conferences that you can attend about your topic?  If so, make a point to attend them.  If you attend events like these, bring business cards.  You may meet someone you can interview on your website, which builds authority and credibility.  You can also meet new contacts to find products to promote in your niche, or just meet new people that will shed new light on your niche and perhaps get you to think about it in a different light.

#9:  Relax

It takes time to grow into a super affiliate.  For every person out there making it look easy, know that they have put in hours upon hours of time and thought into making their business what it is.  If it was as simple as folding napkins, the space wouldn’t have room for anyone. It’s simply a game of outworking others in your space coupled with longevity.

Find a topic, incorporate these steps, and be on your way be to becoming a super affiliate marketer!

How to Sell Your Online Business

An online business can be the product of years of hard work and dedication but at some point: stagnation occurs. Most web owners decide to sell when they have developed other interests and when the considerable stress of operating an online business has worn them out. While this might be the case, they will almost never want to get it off their hands for cheap. Making an advantageous deal happen is an art and the points mentioned below will help you make that happen.

David Fairley

David is widely regarded as the best person to sell your online business.

Members of Affiliate University’s Educational Course on Affiliate Marketing were treated to a webinar in April by David Fairley, who owns

He has helped me sell online businesses in the past and is a very well respected broker of Internet Businesses.

Today I took a step back to reflect on some of the conversations we’ve had and put pen to paper, so to speak.

Steps to Selling Your Website or Online Venture

  • Take as much time as you need as it certainly is a transition of sorts and can make you emotional and prone to bad decision making. Taking a few months is recommended because this gives you the chance to do any fixer-uppers to inflate the price of the business and also to get your documentation together such as profit sheets, sales information, supplier’s contact details, technical manuals and what not for the new owner.
  • The accepted method of evaluating what your online business is worth is to include profit minus expenses and then inflate the value up to twelve times if need be. Now there are technical tools and software which do this calculating for you and give you a good starting point since the final deciding power is you regardless of what stats claim. Many factors are used by such software such as expected sales, current sales, customer base, economic projections, geographical factors, product appeal, and cash flow and so on.
  • Never undermine the value of your business as some people might pay triple what others would so you just need to wait for the right buyer to come along and while you are waiting you can put an ad on eBay or any social platform that you trust. Another well-used trick is to contact suppliers especially if they are larger stores or chains regarding your website and whether or not they would like to buy it. A lot of the time larger stores have thought about creating a defined online presence but maybe they just need an established set up where their products are already being sold.
  • Contacting people that have no connection to your business with a well written email has known to work wonders especially if you can gear it to make the venture profitable for them. Now these people typically include overseas companies that might want a presence in your area but not in a physical brick and mortar form. An online venture can be the perfect gateway especially if that venture has a loyal clientele already. The business could actually benefit from foreign input.
  • While it is rarely necessary to hire a lot of experts such as accountants to get the sale through, you will need to get advice so that you do not make a contract which you end up regretting later. Always remember to get all major agreements on paper so that the buyer cannot back out or wire less money at the last minute and the like. Services like can be useful if you aren’t getting the right kind of offers and want to step up your game but this all comes for a fee.

How You Can Excite The Buyer Into Paying More

  • Be prepared and yet firm. If you appear overly desperate to get rid of the website they will sense something is wrong and that will never go in your favor. Wow them with statistics that your website performs well, brings in new customers on a daily basis and has the potential for unprecedented growth in the future. (This can be done by providing graphs with economic projections).
  • Use specifics when communicating with the buyer to show competence which reflects well on the business. Be honest about page views, visits, sales, web traffic globally and locally, bounce rate and website metrics. Use tools such as Awstats and the Webalizer so you have a more official report to pass on.
  • Be upfront about the costs as this will save you a lot of trouble later on. Give them details of server costs, hosting charges, paid software subscriptions and the whole lot. When you give over the site make sure a detailed but basic manual is included so you can avoid calls and emails from the new owner later on asking for advice on how to run the site. You can also specify beforehand how long you will provide advice for and at what point they will need to take over the reins or hire someone who knows what he’s doing. Financial statements are a great idea as you save time in compilation.
  • Attempt to build a friendly relationship with the buyer so that they are more likely to oblige your needs when it comes to negotiating the price. It is better to build up to it as throwing large numbers around on the onset can scare buyers away. Give the buyers a sense of the passion and conviction you had when you first started out as this will make them value the business more and subsequently pay more for it.

Reputable Marketplaces You Should Look Into

  • SiteBin
  • Website Broker
  • Flippa

The value of virtual property is on the rise as Whatsapp just went for $19 billion so it is safe to assume that every operating online business out there is worth a decent amount of money you only need to make sure your effort and hard work is repaid and that the dream will live on. Many smaller online businesses that are sold get lost in the complex web of larger corporations.

It may not be a bad thing but a buyer that will care for the business will give you more peace of mind as you move on to other projects. Remember a sale will require more than one contract so do not be alarmed and hire a lawyer if you are concerned about legal implications.
